If you have ever watched The Handmaid's Tale and thought the streets of Gilead looked oddly familiar, there is a reason for that. You have probably driven down them.
Cambridge Ontario has quietly become one of the most sought-after filming locations in all of Canada. Directors and location scouts keep coming back for the same reasons buyers keep moving here. The heritage limestone buildings, the Victorian streetscapes, the Grand River, and the kind of architectural character that cannot be built new and cannot be found anywhere else in the region.
The nickname Hollywood Cambridge is not an exaggeration. Here is a look at the movies and television shows that have used your neighbourhood as their backdrop.
THE HANDMAID'S TALE — CAMBRIDGE AS THE REPUBLIC OF GILEAD
No production has put Cambridge on the international map quite like The Handmaid's Tale. The Hulu and MGM series based on Margaret Atwood's novel has been filming in Galt since 2016 and returned all the way through Season 6.
The locations used are ones Cambridge residents walk past every day. The Main Street bridge and the river walk by Mill Race Park appear in some of the most iconic scenes of the entire series. The Cambridge City Council chambers served as the courtroom in early episodes. City Hall featured in scenes where prisoners are escorted from buildings. Queen's Square has hosted crowd scenes, atmospheric smoke, drone photography, and a large gallows set for execution sequences.
The production even used the code name Rocket Woman when filming in Cambridge to avoid drawing crowds. Through Season 6 the Galt core continued to serve as the heart of Gilead with filming on Lansdowne Road, Main Street, George Street, Water Street, and Park Hill Road.
If you have watched the show you have seen Cambridge dozens of times without knowing it.
THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT — DOWNTOWN CAMBRIDGE AS 1960S AMERICA
One of the most watched Netflix series ever made filmed right here in Cambridge. The Queen's Gambit, the 2020 miniseries starring Anya Taylor-Joy, used downtown Cambridge and Brant Road to double for parts of 1960s Cincinnati and Las Vegas.
The heritage architecture of Galt's downtown core is exactly what period productions need. Buildings that look authentically mid-century American without requiring extensive set dressing. Cambridge delivers that on every street corner.
REACHER — BLACK BRIDGE ROAD
The massively popular Amazon Prime action series Reacher filmed scenes on the bridge on Black Bridge Road in Cambridge. If you are a fan of the show you have seen a Cambridge landmark on screen without realizing it.
Reacher is exactly the kind of high profile production that speaks to how established Cambridge has become as a filming destination. This is not a local production taking advantage of affordable locations. This is a major international streaming series choosing Cambridge because it delivers what the production needs.
COLD CREEK MANOR — THE CHAPLIN ESTATE AT CRUICKSTON PARK
This is the one with the most compelling local story. Cold Creek Manor, the 2003 psychological thriller starring Dennis Quaid, Sharon Stone, and a young Kristen Stewart, filmed its manor scenes at Cruickston Park on Cruickston Park Lane in North Dumfries near Cambridge.
What most people do not know is that the estate belongs to the Chaplin family, the same family who founded Canadian General Tower, one of Cambridge's most significant industrial employers, and who were also major contributors to the community including the Chaplin Family YMCA which bears their name to this day.
The Chaplin family's historic estate became the backdrop for a Hollywood thriller and most Cambridge residents drove past it every day without ever knowing their neighbour's home had starred alongside Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone.
The small town scenes near the manor were filmed on Stanley Street in nearby Ayr, which doubled for the fictional rural American town in the film.
MURDOCH MYSTERIES — GALT'S VICTORIAN STREETSCAPES
Murdoch Mysteries has been filming in Cambridge for years and it is easy to understand why. The Victorian era streets of the Galt core are a perfect backdrop for a period detective series set in early 1900s Toronto. The heritage buildings, the limestone architecture, and the historic streetscapes give the production exactly the visual authenticity it needs without the cost of building elaborate sets.
MORE PRODUCTIONS THAT CALLED CAMBRIDGE HOME
The list does not stop there. Cambridge has hosted an extraordinary number of productions over the years.
Designated Survivor, the political thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland, utilized several local spots across the city. American Gods, the Neil Gaiman adaptation, filmed in Cambridge. October Faction, V-Wars, and Departure all shot scenes here as well.
The Hardy Boys used the historic downtown extensively for its 2020 reboot. Silent Hill Revelation used the Main Street bridge and surrounding buildings for its horror sequences. John Q, the 2002 Denzel Washington drama, used the Galt downtown core for major dramatic scenes. Flatliners, the 2017 thriller, shot scenes using Cambridge's distinct architecture.
Even Christmas movies have found a home here. Terrific Trucks Save Christmas and Magical Christmas Shoes both filmed in Cambridge, taking advantage of the charming downtown streetscapes that look equally good decorated for the holidays.
Most recently a production codenamed Kestrel filmed in downtown Galt in May 2025, widely rumoured to be The Terminal List Season 2 starring Chris Pratt. The production closed off Main Street between Water Street and Ainslie Street with pyrotechnics, drones, electronic gunfire, large crowd scenes, and explosions. Cars with European license plates and Belgian flags appeared on Main Street as Cambridge doubled as a European nation. It was one of the most dramatic filming events the city has ever hosted.
Downtown Galt is also a frequent choice for period productions set in the 1940s and wartime Europe. The limestone architecture, the heritage streetscapes, and the scale of the buildings give productions an authentically mid-century European feel that is almost impossible to find elsewhere in Ontario. Cambridge residents have occasionally spotted wartime props and period set dressing appearing on familiar streets overnight, a reminder of just how versatile this city's architecture really is.

WHY HOLLYWOOD KEEPS COMING BACK TO CAMBRIDGE
The answer is the same reason buyers keep moving here. Cambridge has something that cannot be replicated.
The heritage limestone buildings of downtown Galt are genuinely unique in Ontario. The Main Street bridge, the Grand River, the Victorian residential streets of West Galt, the historic church spires. Cambridge looks like a city that has been here for centuries because it has been. That authenticity is exactly what film productions pay enormous amounts of money to find and Cambridge delivers it naturally.
The city has also invested significantly in making Cambridge a welcoming environment for productions. The economic development team actively courts productions and the infrastructure for handling large film crews, road closures, and complex logistics has been built over many years of experience.
The result is a city that has hosted some of the most watched television and film productions in the world. That level of international recognition has a way of putting a community on the map for buyers who are researching where they want to live next.

SIMON'S FINAL NOTE
I grew up in Cambridge and I will be honest with you. We did not always fully appreciate what we had. The limestone buildings, the heritage streets, the Grand River. It took Hollywood showing up with cameras and turning our neighbourhoods into Gilead and 1960s America for a lot of people to step back and really see what Cambridge looks like through someone else's eyes.
What film directors see in Cambridge is what buyers are discovering too. A city with genuine character, real history, and a visual identity that cannot be found anywhere else in the region.
If you are thinking about buying in Cambridge and want to talk to someone who actually grew up here, I would love that conversation. I know these streets the way you know them when they are yours. Not from a camera angle but from the inside.
